The Planishing Process
What is the process of planishing?
Planishing is a highly effective technique used to reduce weld build-up and enhance the surface finish of welded areas.
Planishing is Effective on a Range of Materials
Planishing is a very popular process because of the variability of materials that it can handle. At Toledo Metal Spinning Company, we typically utilize this process with our stainless steel or aluminum cylinders or tanks.
Strength and Blending to an Excellent Surface Finish
When the planishing force is applied to the weld, the weld is flattened, while seamlessly blending into the surrounding base metal. This enhances the strength and durability of the weld, while smoothing the cylinder’s surface, preparing it for a finish to be added, if necessary.
Accelerated weld build-up reduction
Planishing can significantly reduce weld build-up at a faster rate compared to traditional grinding methods. This speed translates to increased productivity and reduced operational time
What is weld build-up?
The process of adding extra welding material to a base metal surface.
There are times when this process is used to rebuild a weld that is diminishing, or extra welding material is added to a previous weld to bring the component back to its required size.
Enhanced Weld Metallurgy
Planishing leads to enhanced metallurgical properties in the weld area, resulting in structural integrity and performance.
Offsetting Distortion
Planishing causes the weld to spread out, which offsets the shrinkage and distortion. As mentioned previously, planishing helps to ensure a strong and durable weld that will last a long amount of time.
What is weld shrinkage or distortion?
Shrinkage causes distortion on the weld, warping the base plate. This results from the expansion and contracting of the weld and metals during the heating and cooling cycle of the weld process. The physical and mechanical properties change as heat is applied
Eliminates Need for Grinding
During the planishing process, the force of the planisher generates up to 15,000 pounds. This eliminates the need for grinding the weld crown, reinforcing its durability. This process is much more efficient than grinding down the weld by hand. Our planishing cell can be considered as a ‘one stop shop’ because the process can accomplish so much.
