Forming Metals Since 1929 - Our History

Yes, you read that right, we’ve been forming metals since1929, making us nearly one century in age! Founded in 1929 by Rudolph Bruehner of West Germany, Toledo Metal Spinning Company (TMS) began as a dedicated metal spinning company. Over the decades, TMS expanded and added to its capabilities with deep draw presses, stamping machines, machining centers, and welding stations were added, streamlining production and evolving into a full-service metal forming operation.

TMS began to reach new heights in 1964, when Ken and Bill Fankhauser purchased the company and began modernizing the shop with new and advanced equipment. Then in 1987, the passing of the torch was initiated when Craig and Eric Fankhauser purchased Bill’s share of the company, continuing the legacy of innovation.

In 1988, TMS launched its now signature line of stainless steel conical hoppers. As demand grew, so did requests for custom features and modifications. To meet those needs, TMS established its in-house welding department, enabling fast and efficient customizations.

In 1998, a sudden midnight fire tore through the facility, destroying nearly all of its manufacturing space and equipment. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the TMS team, the company was rapidly rebuilt – emerging stronger than ever as one of the most advanced metal forming operations in the country. Not to mention, no employee missed a paycheck.

Toledo Metal Spinning Fire

In 1999, with the challenge of the fire behind them, the company initiated the implementation of Lean Manufacturing Techniques to increase efficiency and decrease lead times. Toledo Metal Spinning began performing business as usual, while acquiring new machinery along the way, and was back on its feet again.

Fast forward to 2020, where TMS is still standing strong after making it through the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2024, TMS was honored as one of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Top 100 Small Business in the United States. Read our full history here…

Are UFOs made by metal spinning?

One of the greatest phenomenons is the mystery of unidentified flying objects and how they are made. Do you think they are made by metal spinning? Hypothetically speaking, this could be possible. However, we do not know how big or small these flying objects are. Some may be quite large, and if there is a lathe big enough to form the main frame components, we believe that they can certainly be spun. Another thought we had is the materials used. Are UFOs made from stainless steel, aluminum, or another metallurgical material? What are your thoughts?
